Ding Liren Becomes 17th World Chess Champion by Defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in Tiebreaks

Ding Liren has made history by claiming the title of the 17th World Champion in chess, triumphing over Ian Nepomniachtchi in the final game of the tiebreaks. The luxurious St. Regis hotel was filled with an electric atmosphere as the two skilled players battled it out for three grueling weeks, with spectators following the live commentary closely and eagerly anticipating the decisive moment.
The tiebreak involved four rapid games, each with a time control of 25 minutes and a 10-second increment per move. If a winner was not determined in the rapid games, Blitz games would follow.
In the world of rapid chess, which has a separate ranking from classical chess, Ding Liren is ranked second in the world, just behind Magnus Carlsen, while Ian Nepomniachtchi is ranked seventh. Despite Ding's slightly higher rating, their head-to-head record indicates that they are evenly matched, having played 21 rapid games against each other resulting in Ding winning 8, Ian winning 7, and 6 ending in a draw.
